Headlight replacement.

Hi. I snapped the plastic part off the back of my headlight housing last night. Annoying as the bulb cant be clipped in place now. I have superglued temp fix.

While im at it I might as well replace both the headlamp units. The ones in there aint to bad but are looking a bit rusty. on the screws etc.

Did a bit of a search and people recomend sealed beam units and ones that can take a halogen H4 bulb. (What does sealed beam mean ? Is the bulb in the unit as a whole ?) The sealed beam ones seam to be discontinued anyway. The units I have at present take a H4 bulb but dont seem to produce a very good light. (Not sure whether they are halogen or not ?)

I found these Halogen Crystal headlamps Landrover Defender headlights | eBay but was not sure if the bit about having clear front was just salesman b0ll0x.

Any advice / experience gratfully recieved. Thanks !

are you a sub marine commander, if not then the replaceable ones give better light over sealed beam units

I put some Hella clear-lens units on mine and even with the same H4 bulbs the improvement over my old ones was dramatic. Money well spent

I do the odd bit of wading. Not really been as high as the lights though. Never had a problem with them filling up with water.

When you say Hella clear-lens units. Are they the same as the ones I put the link to ?

I had sealed units on a previous 110 and I think they were the original equipment. The plus side was no chance of water getting in, downside not a great amount of light output. As the others said if you get ones with the replaceable h4 bulbs then they will do the trick

i have the crystal halogen type from paddocks, no complaints

I fitted crystal headlights to both my defenders. My current one I also upgraded the bulbs to Osram Nightbreakers plus. The improvement over the standard headlights is massive. Visability at night is now greatly improved.

Plus its easier to change a bulb in future rather than a whole headlight if a filament blows.

Really don't wan't to ask this but..... What have you done to rear ? Im looking at doing something like the LED conversion. But from my quick look around, they look very expensive.

You are very brave asking.

And I did what you are thinking about. Expensive but "fit & forget". No more vibration blowing the bulbs or melted fuses when water gets in the bulb holders. Stop/tail lights are much much brighter so a bit more built in safety as well.

Before with "pimple" stop/tail lights & indicators & a single fog & a single reversing light.



After with LED stop/tail lights & indicators. LED work light & a not so obvious LED number plate light. The fog & reversing lights have conventional bulbs as one of each was already fitted when I bought Larry.



I had to cut two holes to mount the extra lights but luckily there were spare wiring connectors already in the harness on both sides to plug into.

Colour coded wires made it easy plug & go once the other hole was cut.
