My mate has an L322 which has for quite a while now had a headlight problem. Basically, each headlight comes on when it feels like it. It can take up to 9 or 10 attempts (on/off) to get them both on at the same time. As far as I know, if it's a ballast pack issue, only one comes on and doing a swap for the other side confirms this. However, both his lights work, just not necessarily at the same time....

Have you used the search facility? @Saint.V8 is your man,he should be in touch as I've tagged him

My suggestions would be to check the xenon bulb it could be faulting and the ballast unit could be indeed shyting itself.

You said that one ballast appears to be faulty.
No, I said, as far as I'm aware, if it was a ballast pack, one light wouldn't work and it can be confirmed by swapping them about and if the fault follows the ballast pack then that's the problem. In this case, both headlights are playing up randomly. They both come on but not necessarily at the same time. Sometimes only left, sometimes only right, sometimes neither then sometimes both together. There is no pattern to it to help diagnose the problem. Any ideas?

Yes, a duff ballast pack causing the ECU to shut down.
