I thought I'd have a go at taking apart my headlamps so I know what to do when I buy some bulbs. According to the owners manual, the whole thing comes apart and you can take out the bulb.
The lamp on mine however is just one completely sealed piece of glass with the bulb inside it and the points welded onto the glass. Whats going on there?
If these arent the original lamps,is it better just to buy more lamps and put them on the grill if it means buying whole new lamps anyway?

Originals were sealed beam ya had to replece the full unit. As Buster says get a Halogen conversion kits for em and throw the sealed beam units away..

I nearly cacked meself when I went out the other night, they were so dim. Not going down any country lanes untill I get new ones.
Do I just wire this Halogen kit up to the original wiring;bearing in mind I've never done anything like this before?

it's been a wee while since ah did mine but ah'm sure they just plug in to the existin' wiring;)

When you take out the orig sealed beam type light units, you disconnect the 3 socket plug thatthey plug into this goes straight on to the bulb in the halogen conversion assy. You should not have any probs , as it is a straight swap. There were probs with going from early prefocus bulb type units to sealed beam or halogen as the connector was different, and the unit was thicker where it fitted in the rim assy.
You will need to realign your headlamp aim when finished swap.
2 methods either face vehicle at wall approx 6mts(20ft) away on dip measure from road to centre of headlight, mark line on wall at this height, aim top of cut off of beam so that it is 1 or 2 in (25mm to 50mm) below this line.
The method I prefer is to out onto empty country lane at night that is flat and level Pull up on road in position you normally drive, put lights on dip , cover one light and adjust other, set cut off to give you best range up kerb side whilst being below dazzle level of vehicle coming other way.
repeat for o/s light but to give spread over all road, again below dazzle height for oncoming traffic i.e. not above bonnet level on average car. HTSH
