Hi. Thought my second hand engine had done the headgasket after not even 100 miles after fitting it. There Was oil coming out from under one of the front head bolts and up beside the first glow plug. Also running very rough and smoking. Have stripped it down today . I have taken the head of and sat it straight down on a bit of carpet. I have then turnt it over and have found a piece of metal and a valve cap. However I'm not missing a valve cap . Any ideas about this bit of metal? It's not obvious where it's come from. Thanks

Cambelt broke and a poor repair I'd wager. Does the bit match any part of the rocker gear because they can break when the belt goes.

I have looked over the rocker and can't see anything missing or broke. Everything looks normal other than these bits appearing from somewhere.

They wouldn't be missing as the lost/broken pieces have been replaced. Just the cleaning up is poor, that's what I'm guessing.

I was about to Google what it's called. Yes it does look like that I think. Someone has definitely been in here doing something judging by how loose the nuts where

Almost certainly the cam belt has snapped in the past. This allows the piston's to hit the valves and, if you're lucky, just bend the pushrods, unlucky and the rockers get broken too. Sometimes the followers get damaged too, you can see them down in the push rod tubes. Check them and also that the pushrods are straight.
