Head Lights are Dead Lights

Hello, my series 3 76 109 has a problem with it's headlights. The problem seems to be in the voltage regulator, it is receiving power but not giving it out to the lights... no wires are loose and if you bypass the voltage regulator the head lights go. I've never dealt with one of these units before and my haynes manual gives no mention of it...

Any Help please??

I've had problems with headlights before, but it's always been down to a bad Earth.

What voltage regulator?

The voltage regulator at the top of the bulk head. The wires from the switch stalk are feeding into it.

Is it Ex Military?

Just looked at your profile, and noticed you call it a Ute, so I amuse you're an Aussie, so could be local spec.

No it's not ex military and actually Im a New Zealander. It's got a factory flat deck with drop sides.

No harm at all!!! Now if you'd thought I was an American for some reason then I might but a bit hacked off.. haha. Yes this came from Land Rover New Zealand with a tray deck, they probably where made by a fabrication company in NZ, so not strictly "Factory". It included a stock crate that sloted into the side loops on the sides of the tray.

just replace the reg? there fairly cheap, i mean even though your in NZ, or is that the easy option?

I'm not sure that the lights are meant to run through the reg. I have a series IIA for parts and the lights dont go through the regulator.... I think somebody for some reason has put this in at a later stage, but for what reason I don't know????

just bypass the reg, its not meant to have the lights runing through it anyway

Yeah I think Ive found out why the reg is in the system. The light stalk high beam is faulty at the contact, so bypassing that the reg acts like a relay to switch the high and low beams.

As to the gas lamp comments, what we normally do is bash a dent either side of the bonnet and just fill it with petrol and light it....
