It probably depends on if youve got a 2005 RR Sport or a 1950s series
LR.

Little more info appreciated!

I did the head gasket on my 1990 Rangie twice.. VM diesel. On the
first occasion I was quoted £500 plus for it to be done by the
Landrover main Agent "Evans Halshaw" as they were then.

I thought it must be a muther of a job so I bought a workshop manual
(£60 incl my model), the parts around £100 all in and a Ford Sierra to
run around in (cheaper than hiring a car!) because it must take
forever it Landrover quoted that much.

I had it done the first time in one evening!

Second time I did a bit more engine rebuilding, pistions, shells etc
and recon Turbo. and I reckon that came in around £500 - £600 for all
the bit and engineering work. Engine was fantastic after that, no more
Piston slap and ran like new.

Just my experience. If you are hand with spanners then give it a go.
You could end up stuck with a snapped or siezed bolt but that is the
chance you take.

In contrast Percy (SIIA) cost £40 to sort when he had a 2 1/4 petrol
lump.

As others have said, depends which engine you've got.

I changed the gaskets on my 3.9 V8 myself. £30 for for the gasket set, £15
for new coolant, £6 for the Workshop CD from Ebay. Took about a day in
total (doing bits here and there) , though I'm sure an expert could do it in
just over half a day. So if they've quoted a day to do it then that sounds
about right. Then again, some hourly rates that garages charge these days
is extortionate..where we take our company cars, they charge £50 per hour +
VAT!

I'm handy with a spanner, but by no means an expert. Plus I have the luxury
of acces to other vehicles to get around in as the Rangie isnt my day-to-day
vehicle. So if you are mechanically minded give it a go....but don't blame
me if it goes tits up!!!

That's not that bad I know of garages charging upwards of £85 per hour +
VAT and that's around Sheffield I'd hate to think how much they charge
down south

The book time for a 3.9 is 8.4 hours so if you take off the cost of gaskets, coolant
etc that leaves say £550 which works out at about £55 +vat per hour
so I'd say it's about right
If you want to do it yourself then it's easy as long as you take your time and use
a bit of common sense make sure everything is clean when it goes back on

Is the higher rate to reflect the need to feed the taller mechanics?

Remind me not to take the 101 threre!

When my 94 Disco needed a head gasket it cost £300. My local LR garage
charges around £29 per hour.

Well, I was once quoted £800 just to skim the head on my old Rover 820
which used the same basic engine as the MPi Disco, so that could be a
bargain!

Hi - Please excuse me if I am violating some sort of etiquette rule - this
is the first I have ever posted on a "newsgroup" and it appears I am posting
on one with Europeans. To make matters worse, I am a WOMAN who knows
NOTHING about the Range Rover she just bought.

It is a 93 Classic. I bought it for one reason only - to tow my boat when
necessary. So it is a second vehicle. 3 wks after I bought it - overheated
on the highway - I had it towed to my driveway and had a mechanic look at it
who told me I had blown a "head gasket or head or both"

So - my question is - can you convert your euro quotes on this subject to US
dollars for me so I can know if I am getting ripped off by whomever I get to
work on it for me?

Thank You - and if I am out of line - just say so and I will leave all of
you EUROPEAN MEN and all of your mechanical lingo alone.

Sincerely

Its largely ENGLISH men (and women) , and our quotes are in GBP - so
multiply our numbers by around 1.6 ... 1.7 to get USD

Although its simple enough to convert prices as Steve has observed you
really need US labour (labor) costs as they are likely to be rather
different to those over in the UK there are US contributors to the group
hope fully they will be able to help.
One thing is likely to be the same though Franchise dealers are going to
charge like a wounded buffalo so a quote from your local independant is
likely to be the cheaper option. Most of the lads over here do their own
repairs on Classics so we can help on parts prices you might be able to get
some advise on local repairers from http://www.texasrovers.org/site tho'
their site is a little sparse so far or try

That will be the monetary value but will it be representative of the
charges levied by a garage in the US? Remember a Range Rover is a
foreign, european, specialist and minority vehicle in the US...

Welcome to the global, non-sexist, Solihull product support group.

To give things an antipodean twist, I'd normally quote about 8 hours to
do a pair of head gaskets. That includes a bit of an allowance for any
of those little things that crop up in the process of doing a job like
this - eg breaking an exhaust manifold stud.

So... cost of a gasket set (about NZ$150 here), and 8 hours of labour
(about NZ$400) plus ancillary bits and pieces like a new thermostat,
coolant, cleaning and other gubbins (say NZ$100) and we've got a total
of NZ$650 which equates to US$575 or so.

Hi Mr. EMB - kind of a far cry from the $1500 - $2000 I have been quoted.

So, like the others have said - it has to do with the fact that in the US -
these trucks are foreign and pricey to work on. Your quote is virtually 1/3
to 1/4 of the quote I have been given. Labor time is right on the money. I
don't know what they charge for labor per hour - will have to get back to
you - not sure if its the parts that are the problem or the labor.

Hi Nige - since you asked - NO - I have no ovaries anymore - they were
removed 6 years ago due to a little cancer scare so that can't be the
problem - I just had someone warn me about posting on automobile newsgroups
with men who don't appreciate women jumping on asking stupid questions.
Please forgive me - I meant no harm.
