Hi all,

Replacing head gasket on my 1.8 petrol and also what I believe to be flow pipe (comes out of the right hand side on the top of the engine, split).

Would appreciate advice eg method/technique, specialist tools etc. If it is too long winded, which I suspect it is then if you could recommend a website that would be equally as helpful. For a complete novice how much time should I put aside, a weekend?

Also if you know a good parts centre (Bristol), or website, that would be great.

Finally if there is anything else I should replace while the guts are out I may as well do it, it does sound a bit strained when accelerating (probably age - T reg).

Many thanks

Cheers Sean,

Looks as complicated as I thought!

Should I sent the head off to be skimmed? Is that necessary or would a stanley knife blade do the trick.

Is there any point in giving everything a good clean when I remove it? If so, what should I use?

Thanks

ask whoever you use to get it skimmed to chemically clean it - the mating face will be spotless due to the skim anyways

if you are happy that you can check, and then rectify any warping that might have occurred due to excessive heat, with a Stanley blade, then give it a go

HiGuys, new here so bear with me, i have changed the head gasget on a 99 freelander diesel with a replacement 3 notch or( 3 hole gasget) and after pinning up cam, crank, and pump ect i needed to advance the pump timing to get it to run !!! Very strange i thought so i ran it for a few days a noticed it was a little down on power (new turbo fitted some time ago) i have advanced the timing a little and no improvement. could the compression be down from the head gasget being wromg perhapse. any though appreciated garoid.
