Evening all,

Having returned to P38 ownership yesterday after 18 months in a BMW X5 (.....don't....it still hurts :(!!!!) I seem to have a problem....already!!!!!

When I put my foot on the accelerator it sounds like I have a nest of birds chirping under the bonnet

Have been told that it's probably head gasket, but oil appears fine and filler cap just full of dry, reddish powdery stuff - no mustard anywhere.

Thought I would ask if anyone has any thoughts.......

It's a P38, 4.6 on a 2001 plate with 101K - and was bought from dealer, so want to get to the bottom of it ASAP as, if i've bought a pup, I need to start negotiations!!!!!!

I's appreciate any thoughts on the issue........

Could be exhaust manifold gasket leak or head gasket blown on the outside edge, take it back to dealer and get them to sort it

Thanks very much!

The engine has had all quite a bit of work done in the last 6 months (according to invoices); new water pump, thermostat, rad, manifold & rocker cover gaskets, hoses, idler pulleys and so on.....so I wrongly took that to indicate that all was well with the engine......

Only problem is the dealer I bought it from is 120 miles away and am reluctant to drive it all that way back and risk it going BANG!!!!!

I'll have to have a chat tomorrow & see what can be done.

Incidentally, do you have any idea what a new head gasket (and I suppose it would be worth doing a pressure test at the same time) would cost? Ball park figure would give me something to work to when I speak to the dealer tomorrow!

Thanks again :)

I found a few old posts about P38 squealing and think I'm gonna have nightmares about cracked blocks.....

So, I've just been out to start her up & run her around the road and there is no squealing when she's ticking over, just when accelerating - also does not seem to happen in reverse.

Squeal seems to be coming from the front/left hand side of the engine area, have tried putting water on all the new belts but to no avail.

Also read something on an old thread about UJ's squealing but don't know if the noise would be coming from a different place for it to be them.

Any more tests I could do to try and locate problem - my local Independent can't fit it in for 10 days and I would like to have a better idea when I speak to the dealer (not LR but generic 4X4/Commercial) tomorrow?

Cheers

If it's the alternator bearings or the water pump, putting water on the belts would not eliminate the squeal.
