Anyone know if my 1998 Freelander XEi is supposed to have HDC?
Because I don't have it, and I've seen most Freelanders do...Older than mine and newer?!
I don't mind not having it, I don't think I'll ever need to use it, but I just think it's something that my car should have but hasn't got...
On the gear stick where it should be there's a plastic bit which I can pull down where it would be, if that helps!

I think you should have HDC - thought it was standard on all Freebys.

There should be a sleeve on the gearstick with a large yellow button - you should also see an orange and green Freelander-on-a-slope warning lamps when you switch on the ignition.

It's an excellent bit of kit by the way - so worth tracking down! :)

Often the wires connected to the gearstick switch break off - and someone may have removed the switch itself from the gearstick - but the wires may well still be tucked under the gaiter and the switch is just that - a switch - so can be replaced by any latching switch (mine uses a lamp push button) :D

Hi
If you dont think you will use it then dont worry about it, lots more things you can do to your freelander that will make it look good

cheers

Gordon:)

I don't think I have ABS or Traction Control no...I don't have any lights come on when I turn the ignition on, the only light that comes on is the hand brake, but like you all said less to go wrong!
Not that I've had any problems so far, had it a month now, and go green laning and love it, I don't think I'll ever need them things, will I?!

TC is handy in snow / ice etc, and ABS is useful for normal driving conditions anyway, but dont worry too much, unless of course you plan to descend some really steep, muddy slopes etc.
I did find HDC really useful during the recent heavy snow here in rural Devon!!

Yeap, I found the traction box under the drivers seat was a very useful bit of kit in the last month or so. Normally it sits there quietly and you forget all about it, apart from the initial ABS test when you start up. It is not a replacement for adapting your driving while in the ice, you always drive asif the system isn't there, but when things get a bit dicey its always reassuring that its there to help. So you're sat on the ice and you go to pull away and start to slip and the box says "Hang on a sec while I sort this out", shunts power round to the other wheels and away you go. You go to stop and there is poor traction and a brake locks and the box says "Hang on a sec while I sort this out", theres a hammer of servos and you come to a halt with no hint of vearing off course.

I only had one issue when driving style and technology was stumped when I was approaching a T junction on ice. As I got on top of the junction this lunatic came from the right at Mach 5, also on the same ice. I attempted to stop from my 5 MPH and the car found no traction anywhere so I went into a four wheel lock up and slid across the junction line. Twonk then decided he was turning into my junction but the inevitable understeer was clear to see so I came off the brakes, went on the power, invoking a four wheel slip, while steering right. The back end then broke away to the left as I turned and slid to the opposite side of the road. Caught it on the opposite lock before I hit the curve and completely avoided a collision. I would have never done that in a normal car.

Hippos are ACE!! :D:D:D

Ahh now I feel gutted, I don't have any of this stuff :(
Would anyone know why I don't have it when I have the XEi model which was the top of the range spec back then?!

either the person who first bought asked for it not to be on the vehicle or its not really an XEi, or its a ringer.
Don't fret ABS is a nightmare when it starts to go wrong, search the '3 amigos' and consider yourself lucky. You don't need any of that HDC or TC anyway.
