HDC light on F4 Flashing 1 gear select only.

Hi, my Freelander gave me this error today. The HDC light came on and F4 was flashing in the liquid crystal display, the car pulls away very slowly as if in 4th gear. The car is an Auto, I took to a local garage who said no error codes came up when they ran the diags, the clear the ECU and it ran for about 1/2 a mile then the HDC light came on again and F4 started to flash. Has anyone come across this ? I have googled it and some people have suggested the transmission is shot and will cost £1600 minimum to fix. The car has only done 72,000 miles and had every service not that this has made a difference. Well I am open to suggestions. I am taking the car to another garage that specialises in Freelanders but is not a main dealer.
 
Which light is on? could the temperature sensor be faulty ?

I had a very very similar problem recently. Mine was the electrical connection near the battery that was faulty. Again, no error codes, and in 'limp home' mode (feels like 4th).

My HDC wasn't flashing though. :confused:

Worth a try though...
 
This has cropped up from someone before, and eventually cleared without fining the cause.

The brake pedal switch is a common component used by the ABS ECU for HDC and the EAT ECU for the auto gearbox so I would start investigating there, it's a common cause of HDC waring light faults.

Some gearbox linkage info here but with your HDC light coming on it's likely an electrical problem.

the HDC lights on with the F4 flashing specially when de weather is cold or rainy.

Hi am haveing the same prob F4 flashing and amber HDC light on. It went into the garage today , they say it need a new solenoide but will have to take the box out.Is there solenoids inside the gearbox? ? thout they were on the outside behind the cover ?? help !! thanks
 
search on here or lro.com, for f 4 fault and a lot is revealed, if i remember something about a connector that gets wet and shorts out. not as expensive as garage would have you believe
 
As mentioned above mine was nothing gearbox related but a dodgy electrical connection near the battery (within or under the ECU I think). It still cost me a bit to get fixed as it was done by a main stealer, but nothing like a new box which one garage thought it needed!

Basically, don't be fobbed off and get electrics checked first.

Hi all , this was originally sent to Hippo as a thank you as I had my 2001 V6 auto Freelander going into limp mode regularly with flashing F4 and hill descent light amber.It was getting worse each time I drove it.

"I just wanted to say thanks for your info re check wiring looms if solonoid faults show up for the transmission...2001 V6 auto Freelander.
I had a quick look at them but couldn't see any problem and took the car to a automatic specialist who said the faults showed two solonoids faulty as well as throttle position sensor as well as hill descent light fault being on continuously. So cost was going to be around AU$1200 +.
Today mechanic called and said that one wiring loom had been rubbing against the radiator or hose etc and bare wires were showing , so he covered them with silicone (which stopped exposed wires touching) and hitched them out the way and no more fault codes showing.

From memory the wiring loom was on the left hand side ,towards the front .
