My car is an auto 2005 Range Rover sport 2.7d 109000miles

I have had my battery recently replaced by an auto electrics company, who have fitted a ‘banner p8820 88Ah’. As the weather has got colder I am noticing starting is problematic with error codes flashing up but then going away soon after (for things like hdc). Also the lcd display is flickering slightly. The car has also developed a rough idle at startup which goes away as soon as the car is warm (I was suspecting glow plugs, but then remembered how sensitive range rovers are to correct voltages and thought this might be worth a look). I have also got a recent parking sensor fault as well!

battery was fitted in September and has always had the strange error messages appear fleetingly on startup since.

the battery is still new and under warranty and if is underpowered for the car should not have been fitted anyway! Hoping this will solve all my problems - I may be being optimistic . Cheers in advance for any advise

Your symptoms sound like the battery is not fully charged.
Have you checked that the battery terminals are good & tight?
Why did you have the battery replaced?
Was the charging system checked for any issues/stored fault codes?
Is the car used for short journeys with a lot of electrics on? (This will drain the battery & the alternator will not be able to keep up, the alternator is only intended to keep a fully charged battery topped up)

Might be an idea to try one of the online battery sites (such as Tayna) & enter your vehicle details - many ask for the reg - to see what comes up.
Based on the details you've given Banner's own site doesn't list that part number for your vehicle:
http://bannerbatteryfinder.co.uk/results.aspx
Whether it would be worth you contacting Banner to see what they say about the one they've fitted?

ETA
Bit more digging suggests the P8820 is an '017' & the ones recommended for the Sport are '019'. Same physical size, but different in power.

hi mate, thanks for help.
I bought the car in summer with a few electronic niggles, the auto electrics place said the battery was knackered so replaced it in September.
As the weather has got colder it struggles to start smoothly, it turns over fine but sometimes takes ages to start, when it does its rough and shakey until it warms up. I was suspecting glow plugs but now thinking all Symptoms might point towards the battery being under powered ( maybe glow plugs not getting enough juice?)

Sometimes Fault codes on start, such as hdc, which clear straight away.

intermittent cruise control

poor starting

and now I have a front parking distance control fault!

I will get in touch with the auto electrics place and try and return battery for correct one and hope all my issues disappear, although I doubt it.

cheers for info

That battery is too small, I suspect its ok for the petrol but not diesel. You want around 100ah and 8-900 CCA. You can get this in an 019 frame for around £90 from Tanya.

It's often said that you should fit the largest battery the tray will accommodate, but is it possible to fit a larger (in terms of CCA) battery than the vehicle's standard alternator can charge ?

What voltage is the car charging at?
Non genuine Denso alternators cause all aorts of weird issues, as do rebuilt ones.

Goole says the Banner is 700A which is to small, you want low to mid 800a, some are liisted as 1000a, the halfords Yuasa 019 are decent batteries

Basically you need a powerful 017 or a normal 019, you appear to have a low powered 017.

That battery is A not of suitable capacity for the vehicle, and B Banner batteries in my experience are garbage anyway.
I've never seen one last more than a couple of years in the correct application range, so underrated it'll last less time.
