The threaded bars are surely for limiting the throttle movement, that is, the UPPER and LOWER governed engine speeds.

One threaded bar is tickover - that's the one the lever leans on when you do NOT have your foot on the throttle. The other one limits top engine REVS. It does NOT affect power lower down. The engine will probably self-destruct if the upper limit top revs setting is allowed to go up more than a little.

The black smoke when you deck it from slow revs means an expert has been in the pump and has set the max fuel delivery a bit too high. The answer is to press the throttle down more progressively.

i turned the pump up on my 300tdi and have not noticed any loss in fuel economy.it all depends on how heavy your right foot is.the gain in power when the pump is turned up is well worth any slight decrease in mpg as it gives you the confidence to actually overtake or pull out of junctions without ****ting yourself wondering whether you are going to make it without getting wrote off!
