Lift the cubby box lid to reveal two screws under the front lip either side of the catch. Remove the screws which release the window switch pack. Be careful that you don't lose the screw retainers. Lift the switch pack to disengage the two clips at the bottom from under the walnut gear shift surround.

Pull off the electrical multi-plug to the window switches and then gently ease the whole panel off the handbrake lever. The hole for the handbrake lever is wider at the bottom so lift the window switch panel and it will come off very easily.

The gaiter is connected to the window switch panel with staples so remove these carefully one by one and gaiter will come away. Refitting is a reversal of the procedure. If you have heavy duty staples all the better but you could either use the old ones by re-bending them with pliers or just use ordinary staples through the same holes.

Hope this helps.

Hi Baloney999
Thank you, so it is not nescessary to remove the rubber grip?

It is a push-on item. Will need a lot of twisting back and forth to get it off. Yes, it should come off to do the gaiter. I replaced mine earlier this year and the gaiter is secured to the above mentioned panel with a plastic clip and the staples. It is easier to put the gaiter on to this plastic clip when it is off the car. I found a heavy duty staple gun worked well, then folded the staple ends flat with a screwdriver. Be careful though, you can break the plastic clip.

I didn't need to remove the rubber grip to replace the gaiter. I replaced the gaiter with a leather one from ebay and I have removed and replaced the window switch pack a couple of times to work on the fascia switches and the gaiter has come over the handbrake lever without any trouble and is still a tight fit.

thank you to all that replied, as a very new owner of a 1995 p.38 ,i have had it just 1 week now, so far loving it but i am sure that there will be many more questions for me to ask!
once again thank you Brian

Hi everybody

Job completed satisfactory, following tha advice given i found that it was not necessary to remove the handbrake grip as the switch panel complete with the old gaitor attached will come past the grip as the slot is taperedie wider at the bottom, thanks to all Brian
