Handbrake seized

I've got a D reg 110 with the old linkage style handbrake (as its described in Haynes anyway).

This appeared to have seized with the handbrake on, when pushing the handbrake down the brake didn't release and when you released the lever it just popped back up again instead of staying down.

I got underneath it to work out which bit of the mechanism had gone wrong expecting to find it was something in the handbrake drum itself having had a quick google of common causes.

I disconnected linkage from the rod that enters the handbrake drum and had a play with the rod no problem, I could hear the shoes moving in the drum no problem so would appear everything is ok there.

I tapped the linkage that is connected to the handbrake cable back into the handbrake off position and got my other half to pull the handbrake into the on position which did move the linkage back. When she pushed the handbrake down in to the off position the linkage didn't move forward again, the cable just bows where it goes from the hand brake level through the chassis.

Anyone had this before and managed to get the linkage to bits to sort it as I'm not having any luck trying to get it off so I can have a good look at it??

sounds like you need a heavy duty return spring fitted

have you found the square adjuster that's sticking out the back of the tranny brake mounting plate ?

No I've not seen the adjuster but I wasn't looking for it Is it above the rod that activates and releases the expander?

@robint Sounds like a plan but I think one of the pivots has pretty much seized up need to get the linkage off to give it a clean or replace it.

drop the prop and have the tranny brake drum off then all will be revealed

Just had a quick look and all that I can see on the other side is the prop shaft going to the rear axle.

I haven't taken the prop shaft off and the removed the drum to have a look in the brake because I assumed the since I could see the linkage itself wasn't moving it is should the problem was there...

isnt this the adjuster you are talking about?

Ok that rings a bell, just above that is one of the bolts that holds the mounting for the linkage to the transfer box.

The pivot in red is what I think is causing the problem - pic also from the guide.

PS the reason I think it is this pivot is that this appears to be where the movement stops when releasing the handbrake.

Yeah I was trying to get the bracket off that holds the linkage but have come up against a bolt into the transfer box that isn't moving anywhere

Although I have the cable version, I found access to the handbrake assembly easier by removing the middle front seat and panel underneath.

I've got a box but sure I can get it out, will give that a go over the weekend if I don't get chance before.

I did remove the cubby box and the pannel underneath which did allow me some easier access however there is still one bolt holding the mount for the linkage to the transfer box that is seized in place...

What do people use to try and un-seize a bolt in an awkward place?

Out of interest what is the adjuster previously mentioned by Sean used for??
