I am fitting a handbrake cable to my FL its a 1.8 W reg 2000 model its the lefthand cable the number on the cable seems right SBP101310
but when I fitted it I noticed that the spring lenght the bit that fits into the brake lever on the shoe
Is longer than the one I took off
the cable should come through the backplate bend round and go into the lever no slack
but this cable has got a lot of slack so much so as it goes through the backplate it bends down then up and finaly into the lever on the shoe
so because there is a bend in spring part I think it is causing the handbrake to be tight
what is the differance in handbrake cable between the later freelander and the early one just incase it has been marked up wrong
or deos anybody know what the fault coud be:D

That part no. has been superceded with SBP101311 but don't know what the difference is.
The cables may be different lengths.

With the later freelander the movement of that spring is held in a clip on the lever that crosses to the other shoe. I'm not sure if the earlier brakes like yours have this.

Won't the free length of the spring reduce when connected to the handbrake lever adjuster/compensator? It will be difficult to achieve this if you have only changed one cable and they are different lengths as it probably can't compensate enough.

No the free length of the spring remains the same only gets shorter when pulling the handbrake up
the free length of the cable spring is longer than the one I took out
will take some pics and post

but the free length will also reduce when you tighten the adjuster at the lever

It may reduce but it is only small amout
where the cable enters the backplate, till it gets to the shoe lever needs to be fairly tought so when you apply the handbrake it directly pulls the lever
in my case because the spring with the wire in bends down then up then accross to the lever
when i pull up the handbrake up its not pulling the lever

So from what your saying there is no clip to hold it against the flat lever that goes from one shoe to the other. On the later versions that is the only thing that stops the spring your referring to straightening out and rubbing on the revolving hub. Is it the same on the other side?

yes there is a clip in the middle that holds the spring cable in place
from that clip to the lever on the shoe the spring cable is straight
but where it comes through the backplate to the middle of the clip the spring cable bends down then up its like a u bend

That sounds way too long. From memory there should just be a steady downward curve from the backplate to the spring clip then almost straight to the lever.

It's got to be the wrong cable, seems strange it has the old part no. too
Where did you get it? could it be marked with the incorrect no.?

I got it from a place called famous 4x4
I have my doubt its the right one this is a replacement for the first one they sent me
they seent me the right hand side instead of the left the tag on it, with the number was tied on with a bit of string
this cabe the number is on a yellow tag that is taped round the cable looks like it was done from new
I am going to take it off today and and replace the old one and take a photo to compare
the only reason I changed the cable is because I fitted a new cable to the right hand side
and because the left cable had had streched it was pulling the equaliser braket right round
me being a perfectionist though I would change it

Well i don't think you can go wrong with the installation as long as the inner and outer cable fixings are correct.
I have a suspicion that the problem lies in the fact you have changed the cables separately and that you have the correct cable on the RH side and trying to fit the older obsolete cable on the left.
The cable length must be different to the one you have on the right therefore you can't set the adjustment at the lever. Try to identify the RH cable and match it up.

The part no.s on microcat are RH side .... SPB101301 .... LH side .... SPB101311

The older obsolete part no.s were SPB101300 and SPB101310

I went to take the cable off today and low and behold the spring cable looks ok
it was not like that yesterday
maybe driving it around and usung the handbrake sorted it out
or maybe working in the rain as not the best think to do
anyway thanks for your help hopefully it should be ok now

 that's weird, somethings not or hasn't been returning correctly somewhere.
