Hand held contact less tachometer? where to point?

Ive seen a few of these hand held contact less tachometers about which basically work via laser,, If I was wanting to know the rpm of my old series 3 landrover, where or what would I have to point this thing too.

Has any one on here got one, if so how do you rate them?

I used to use one at work, triggered by rotation, so you could point it at, say, a lathe chuck and when the beam was hit it recorded it .. so I'd guess you'd need to pimt it at a pulley or fan etc. (I guess it timed the laser between sending a pulse and the return of the beam)

I think they used to make one that also recorded pulses so you pointed it at a distributor or HT lead.

I don't think they worked very well as they were pretty subjective and relied on a decent operator for good results.

i think Paul is thinking about a clamp on type meter that can be used around a plug lead - they work very well and do appear to be a lot cheaper than the infra red/laser spot versions and combine a lot more functions in one unit

We used to use something like this .. it's a long while ago and now I come to think of it we always had to stick a bit of tape on the rotating part, or blacken shiny stuff!!

You might be right about the clamp-on for the HT leads though .. it was a long while ago ..
