Hand Brake drum.

Just about to dismantle the prop shaft to try to resolve a leak from the back of the transfer box. Might have oil on the handbrake drum which may mean new shoes.
Are the brake shoes on the hand brake the same as those on the wheels or is it another trip to Paddock ?

Yer can boil the fluid off yer shoes, just stick em in a pan and boil for a few minutes and the old fluid will come out of the linings.
Be sure and put the pan back where yer got it from though.

If boiling brake shoes in the kitchen may cause domestic 'issues' then cleaning the shoes with rags and petrol does the job too. I've found that leaks into the handbrake are sometimes caused by the spline seal behind the output flage nut. Rather than messing with that put the rear prop back on with some gasket sealer on the flange.

I have enough trouble gutting fish and pheasants in the kitchen without boiling brake shoes though
If the shoes are in bad nick do normal road brake replacement shoes fit?

ive got exact same prob handbrake failed on mot cos of leaky seal easy enough to replace might as well do it properley then you know its right passed mot now whoo!

as far as i know they are not the same
all these "fixes" are all well and good but DONT EVER cut corners on brakes not even hand brake
strip everything down change the rear seals/gaskets clean the backing plate and springs in a good degreaser then rince, fit NEW shoes, clean the drum of any contaminents and reface the drum with emery cloth refit drum and adjust shoes and finally fit prop shaft

that is the only way it should be done
and this goes for any brake work
no messing around do it propally or not at all

ere this seals the one thats gone, yer best off just gerrin a set of shoes, clean everythin with thinners before yer put them on ,
