just bought my first landy in 8years, (went jap for work) took me all of 30seconds to be hooked again.
any way its a 1990 110 csw with 2.5 td not in bad nick at all, engine is a turner recon and seems to have only done about 30000 since it was put in. the problem is as soon as you get to a hill of any kind it losses power almost instantly, will do 70 on the flat without any drama!
engine has ticked since iv had it but it appears to be exhaust manifold leak rather than anything nasty inside,
my question is could the blown inlet/exhaust gasket be the culprit for the woefull power, or am i looking at something else?

cheers j

yep blowing exhaust can do it, or it could be sucking air into the turbo somewhere. But TD's are fairly gutless on hills anyway.

On steep hills, I regularly have to change down to 3rd or even 2nd if towing.

A blown exhaust gasket could well be the cause of poor performance on a turbo diesel. If it's leaking enough to reduce the flow of gasses over the turbo then the turbo won't be spooling up as much as it should.

How bad is the leak?

the blow is quite bad, when you rev engine you can clearly see it puff smoke,
just wandering what opinion was as i have bought a full gasket set but realy would prefer not to disturb anything else needlessly. but sounds like the exhaust gasket is the culprit.
not expecting rocket ship performance :) but the trouble with going up hills badly is that im in north wales and there aint many flat bits!
cheers

Spray the manifold studs with some Loctite Freeze & Release or Plusgas a couple of hours before cracking them off (oooerrr!) reduces the risk slightly of snapping the studs.

Obviously you need to sort out the manifold leak but don't expect much in the way of pulling power out of a td. They only make about 80bhp and a pitifully small amount of torques. Not terribly economical either. Start saving up for a 200tdi is probably the commonest piece of advice you're going to hear.

Know what you mean I was exiled to Blaenau Ffestiniog for 8 years.

bleanau! sorry to hear that mate. cant say to much as its only just up the road from me in dolgellau.

well im going to do the gasket tommorow and see how she goes after that, nice to have confermation on the prob before taking her apart.

have to admit i did intend to just buy an old 200 disco and do the heart transplant as soon as i got her, but the engine is in good order apart from this blow, and if this doesnt sort it out i might rethink the tdi option.

dont supose anyone knows where you can get either reasonably priced carpet sets for csw? or the black matting stuff? only complaint iv realy got about the old girl is someone has lost all but the tunnel carpet and shes a bit noisy inside :)

cheers for the advice guys, much apprieciated.

I remember the 110 2.5 N/A diesel I had, and I dare say I found its gutlessness rather charming, if frustrating.

to be honest i dont mind an engine being gutless if its doing its best :) iv had many series landys in the past. but she aint right, i had a td 90 many moons ago and she went pretty well, and trouble is even though 110 is a bigger bus shes not laden! only a few tools in back and myself. its basically as if there aint a turbo attached to it, however im pretty sure its working so the airseal problem seems to be a likely culprit. i know the td was never earth shattering but if i remember right factory states 85bhp? which is the same as double cab hi-lux s iv had and they go pretty well.
i think iv forgotten what landies are like:)

The problem in this kind of situation though, is that the Turbos are fitted with lower compression pistons, so if the turbocharger isn't spooling correctly and delivering the required amount of boost, the engine will run very sluggish, probably worse than if it were naturally aspirated.

yes much worse than a na 2.5! but one sly afternoon off and shes a different beast :) all is well in her engine department ,she pulls now! and actually heard the turbo working rather than half arsed tuneless whistle:)
have to say that the state the gasket was in, im not suprised at all she wasnt right, half of it was pretty much gone!

but she feels like she should now so im well chuffed :) thanks for the help guys.

cheers.j

dont worry mate, when it goes bang thats exactly what il do. they are not bad lumps when they work and iv always had a bit of a soft spot for the forgotten engine.
