if you are only getting a dull sound, it could be that you are not pinching the string onto the fret hard enough, position finger between to frets and push hard so the string is touching the frets at each end, then it should give a clearer sound.

More a case of not getting the angle of all the fingers right until I can reliably get fingers positioned I'm stuck
 
I was the same when I started. My fingers weren't flexible or strong enough to make shapes and press hard enough. There are exercises you can do to strengthen them but I just kept trying untill I felt like my arm was guna fall off and I got there eventually.
 
Bloody good thread, this forum amazes me :)

I want to play an instrument, tried drums and had a set of electronic ones but the realisation that you can't really get music out of them without one or more instruments as well sort of put me off trying and I sold them.

Keyboard seems too difficult, guitar would be great and I would settle for being able to play wish you were here by pink floyd which I really like and is apparently quite simple, basically just get a tune out of an instrument:)

Is there any simple test that would determine if it was even worth my trying??

Don't want to waste more money:(

Naturally it has nothing to do with my brother who has self learnt guitar and drums, his kids play, piano, brass, woodwind, violin, cello, bass guitar and god knows what else, the joys of being young I guess.
 
Looking at the kit at my disposal it seems a shame to not persevere- I'm just trying finger positioning at the moment. Going to try each day and see if it improves- wireless head phones in practice amp.
 
our youngest has been having guitar lessons for a while... a good teacher can sort both your technique and any problems with the guitar.itself.
 
practice your scales one note at a time, will build finger strength up, and after a while you will start to hear bits of music you recognize. blues scales are good, same pattern shape just start on different frets.
 
I found- the action of the strings is very high- there are a spare set, so I have lowered the height slightly and a dining room chair has helped position guitar to a better position as well
 
is it an acoustic? quite often it is easier to get a better sound from nylon strings, they are also softer on the fingers to start with.
 
ahh cool, just take some getting used to. i tried to teach my dad but he has no patience.

if im finding it hard to make a chord i sit with my fingers in the shape for an hour or so, seems to work for me. helps getting into it quicker.
