Hello all

I have just bought a 1998 Freelander XEDI
It has a annoying problem which I hope I can fix cheaply :D

If I go through the gears leisurely there is this awfull groaning and vibrating from underneath but...if I go through them giving it some stick its virtually gone.

This is making my fuel consumption a bit poor because im always giving it some :D

Im sure you have had this query many a time, I just cant find any

Thanks in advance, Darren

is this an echo ?.. . . .reet git underneef wiff er bar . . .pry yer bearing each side er yer vcu and its mounts also were drive shaft comes outa ird un also into main rear diff, also check your rear wheel mounts at same time [last one is unlikely but worth er check] this might give you a clue :)

Does it seem as though you can "rev through" the vibration when you give it some stick as though it only occurs at lower revs by any chance?

So, at low revs you get this annoying humming, buzzing rattle comming from..let me guess - the nearside front area?
If you floor the right foot it gets louder and seems to resonate more?
Then as the revs climb it gets through the vibration range and goes completely higher up the rev range?
Mainly on stop / start town driving?
Am I getting close???? :D

You'll be getting unpopular and a good smack from Slob if you don't tell us your diagnosis soon!

Hi ZX12arrgh,
I had a similar problem and it was the two support bearings on the drive shafts. ( One on either side of the VCU) I changed them and the groaning / Vibration went. I also changed the front supprt bush on the rear diff, and aht a diffrence to the car. If you do go and get new bearings check out your vcu unit at the same time. Do a search on these areas and you will find loads of info. Also if you get new parts, get the rel deal stuff and not the cheaper stuff.
Cheers.

Sorry for the delay.

If you get underneath with a spanner and undo your frontpipe bracket where it attaches to the IRD you will probably find it falls apart in your hands or has a huge crack in it. If this is the case Its cheap and easy to get a length of iron from B&Q, cut to size, drill holes and attach to your front pipe using a standard exhaust bracket (the ones that join back boxes etc). Drill 2 holes on the flat iron bar to attach under the nuts on the exhaust bracket and tighten back up - jobs a good un.

Let me know how you get on.

I am of course taking it your Hippo is an old L series Diesel not a TD4???

Hi ZX12arrgh, Yes these are the babys. But get the real deal ones. You should get a good 20/30 K out of them. Also get the front bush of the rear diff checked. They are cheap but fiddly to change. Also look at that IRD mount that Tinytdi speaks about. I have heard it is a problem area too I

Yeah - the IRD mount does sometimes go but these tend to me more on the K series than the L series. Worth checking also though - well noted.

I will second what you said about getting the genuine support bearings - the non-genuine ones tend to be made of chocolate.

If the brackets seem fine also check the resonator box in the inside of the N/S/F wing is not rattling against the wing. Give the outside of the wing a few belts with your fist and you sill soon tell if its touching. (dont worry -the wing is placcy and will not dent).:D

Support bearings tend to make a droning noise comming up from the floor under the handbrake. usually tell if these are shot by coasting at walking speed. If the noise is present until you stop - it is definately these!!
If you want new ones to live longer I find that blasting them with grease keeps all the water and nasties out for longer (but I do tend to do high milage and lots of wading in salt water!!!)
