The Freelander has developed, quite suddenly, a strange noise.

Driving back from Leeds to home, about 17 miles, a I eased off the power it started to make a grinding noise. Foot back on the power and it stopped.
Managed to get it home and am awaiting a break in the weather to have a look.

It is definitely coming from drivers side front.

Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Well, the noise has now vanished......

could it have been the starter motor ??

Mine used to do this, did nigh on 40k like this with no seemingly ill affect. Never did find out what it was, car died at nearly 240k!

It made this noise whilst sat on the drive in neutral, thats why Im thinking starter motor as opposed to any kind of running gear.

I think I would also be checking ancillary belts and pulleys, especially tensioners . I would also check crankshaft end float, but probably ott!

I would be checking all belts and everything driven by them, or near them where the belt could catch.
