green lanes in the peaks (glossop area)

Two lanes for you both suitable for all vehicles, although the second one is easier with a low range box. The map references are for OS landranger map No 110

Lane one
This starts just up from the Fox house pub at grid ref SK270805 and goes to grid ref SK290835.
The start is fairly gentle with just a few largish bumps, after about a mile you can explore to your left where there is a section of steep hills to try out your hill climbing abilities. After this it starts to get a bit bumpy so keep your speed down if you don't want to end up butting your windscreen.
At grid ref SK286826 you can go strait on or turn left, if you go left be warned just after the gate there is a BIG hole and a narrow gap marked with two large stone slabs.

Lane two
Starts at grid ref SK202815 and goes to grid ref SK183824.
The start of this lane is a bit steep and once you get past the mast at the top it can get washed out at times, proper off road tyres will manage at all times, but if like me your on normal tyres avoid this route if it's been raining a lot, found I couldn't get past a large mud bath so had to reverse for about 1/2 mile before I could turn around.
Lane is about 50/50 gentle track and narrow rutted tracks with the downhill section at the end narrow and very steep, low range is needed here or you'll be on the brakes all the time going down.

If your coming from the Glossop direction it's easier to do lane two first as at the end if you turn right your on the road heading towards lane one.

That's the Houndskirk road, and you shouldn't 'explore' the section referred to. It is NOT legal to drive on. The legal part is on the lane, not to any side of it, whatever the locals/****s do or the tracks look like.

****s that do drive off lane and onto this area give us all a bad name and continuing to drive on it, or promote driving on it, WILL weaken any case anyone can put forward for keeping the lane open.

The other part mentioned is legal, but IS hard at the hole mentioned just after the gate, or just before if coming the other way ...

Please, if you're going that way by all means do so, but please DON'T use the area mentioned. See Glass website for an article on this ...

Sorry about that, and thanks for the info will keep to the main track in future.

No worries ... there's places we've probably all been that aren't quite legal ...

On our last trip out we did houndkirk rd, the area you are reffering to is in a very bad state and seems to be getiing larger and more torn up by week, it seems cnuts have been useing this area as a offoad play area, if this continues i dont see it being long before this lane is lost for ever

also i belive the second lane you refer to half of it is now a restricted byway, there are signs put up by the councilsaying this at the end you started and theres another where lane passes the road to Abney so i believe this half of the lane is now closed, but i would check with either your local GLASS rep, or check on the councils definitive map

Yep. And it will take a hell of a long time for that area of moorland to recover. Like you say, it is quite severly chewed up now, not helped by the fact that the earth is very soft.
