3 doors are 2080kgs. This is the max laden weight of the vehicle...ie passengers, luggage, full tank of fuel etc.

This might be the reason we are getting a low % reading for our towing,

Is GVW the same as Kerb weight don't think so. Just found this on another site.

Kerb Weight: Vehicle weight when its not loaded with passengers and luggage. It includes full tank fuel.

Gross Weight: Vehicle's Kerb Weight + Passengers + Luggage. You can also consider the following equation: Gross Weight - Kerb Weight = Vehicle's loading capacity.

So is the figure I have of 2505kg gross vehicle weight and not kerb weight ???

I'm not sure to be honest.

I've got a feeling my dealer was right with a 96% match. I think we need to get this right if you are towing at 111% I think thats illegal.

Landrover say its got a tow capacity of 2000kg, my van is below that, so I'm fairly sure I'm ok. My licence covers me upto 4000 odd kg towing (braked), so I'm not too worried.

ok, taking mine as an example....

2080 is gross vehicle weight. As I said, this is the maximum weight fully loaded, passengers, luggage etc.

Kerb weight is 1675. This is the vehicles weight empty, including full tank of fuel, spare wheel and all standard accessories/tools. Therefor I can load 405 kilos in my freelander and it is legal, as long as I respect the axle loading as stated on the weight plate.

4080 is gross train weight. This is the gross vehicle weight(2080), plus the weight of a trailer and its load. So, if I had the car fully loaded to its limit, I could pull exactly two tons.

Forget this 100% ratio stuff. It is a RECOMMENDATION by the Caravan Club. They state that for comfort, the weight of your caravan should be 85% or less than the kerb weight of the car. Experienced caravan users can increase this to 100% - ie caravan weight equals car weight. They dont recommend that you exceed 100%. However, the Freelander is fully capable of towing up to its legal limit. Exceeding the limit, well any other Landrover is rated to tow 3.5 tons, which is getting close to 200% over. Most Jap 4x4`s will tow 2.8 tons, so the ratio thing is a nonsense really. Its a handy guide for Joe Bloggs who has never used a caravan before, but if you are sensible it is not a problem. It is not a legal requirement and nothing to do with VOSA. as long as you dont exceed Gross train weight, they are not bothered.

As for the original post, a Freelander in good condition should not need spring assistors.

I thort that was the case with respect to weights.

Going on your figures, In my case I am exceeding the gross train weight. It seems strange that we all have different vehicle gross weight values.

My GWV is 2505kg
My GTW is 4080kg

So going on those figures my GWV of 2505kg, and my caravan of 1600kg, gives me a total weight of 4105kg so I am exceeding my GTW by 25kg.

As for the Vosa boys, I'm a moderator on a caravan forum and know of a few members there who have been pulled by the Vosa boys, one being fined £1000. There favorite stretch seems to be the M5.

Cheers
