Just been out and bought a really tidy d1 3.9 v8 manual xs spec its the straigest one ive had and pretty tidy underneath couple of solvable issues, now my issue is im starting to get cold feet. i was aware it would be juicy as it doesnt have lpg and ive always had diesels. Im now starting to wish i had bought a diesel. My question is am i going to get more out of a diesel as an all rounder, (ive had diesels but cant really remember if it was as much fun) my v8 has only got 74k but i hate the manual box, fuel economy is terrible however it is mint condition sounds amazing and its the spec i wanted plus it was cheap. Do i sell and buy a tdi or stick with it and get on with the bolt on bits what would you lot do ....... and be fair i know most of you prefer diesels and i think i do to lol but im really torn weather to keep it or not

It largely depends on what you want to do with it.

If it's a daily smoker, LPG will help with running costs.
If it's a toy then I don't suppose running costs really matter.

As with all D1's it's the rustiness that dictates whether it's a good one or not... I suppose you could always swap the body onto a diesel chassis and running gear if that's what you want to do?

Having done a year / 10k in a V8 and just swapped to a 300tdi the drop in performance is pretty noticeable. But having said that, it's a 4x4 - if you want to go fast you buy a sports car, right?

My advice is sleep on it - the decision that hits you when you wake up is the one to go for!

sounds a good choice "jon"

It may sound niave, but is it hard to drop the diesel engine and box into his shiney disco?
maybe insurance probs?

or, if you`ve not seen "jons" linkey about his SHINEY disco, then do so -- nice-shiney :D

Good advice i will, there could well be the oppotunity to make £600 profit on it if i sell to a mate withing 3 days i have a few vehicle it is only here to get me out of trouble in bad weather and occasional greenlaning with the lads, yea having a v8 does have the smile factor and it seems good off road i.e. No need for low range but as you say if you want fast buy a sports car but a sports car could not pay for its self where a landrover will.. Oh i dont know its been driving me mad all day after using £10 of petrol in 18 miles

Love your thread jon about your restoration and i have to say im inspired to keep my v8 and make use of all the good bits would it be difficult to change d1 rear quarters to accomidate d2 tail lights as ive already bought 04 front end
