Hi all
I was after some advise on the new noise I have on my 1988 Land Rover 110
It now squeals on full lock in reverse and has started to judder in reverse on full lock too.
I read it could be a sign of the power steering pump drive belt needs adjusting/ replacing??
Any advise would be appreciated
Cheers

Hi thanks for your help, forgive my ingnorance, if I remove the belt and run it on full lock and it's quiet it's the belt , if it continues it's something unrelated to the steering pump??

Yes exactly, if it doesn’t do it with the belt off then it’s the pump that’s back at fault.

If it does do it with the belt off then the pump is likely fine and the issue is elsewhere in the drivetrain

Also it may be worth me saying that don’t hold the steering on ‘full’ full lock (as in sitting on the steering stops) as that stresses the box and pump and can blow seals etc,

Thanks, just a thought, I did adjust the steering box 3 weeks ago , could this be related? Could I over tightened it or something??

As said earlier post. Your tyres could be rubbing on the arms. Put on full lock & check treads not touching & catching. This will jerk the motor as treads catch & feels worse as it's low speed.
This is normally caused by bigger/wider tyres & wheel stops not been altered.
Check this first ;)

Hi
Just checked under the car white engine running, what's happening us when the steering is turned on full lock either way the pulley wheel in the front with the small belt attached (pas pump??) is slipping causing the squealing and I assume the juddering .if this is the case do I need to add more tension or is the pump at fault ??
Cheers

Check fluid level & tighten up belt.
You may need to replace this belt soon as it will go deeper into he V pulley.
10 mins job to tighten belt. ;)

Normally if it's the pump they make a whine type noise all the time & gets worse on full lock.

Ok will give that a whirl, the belt feels quite tight , I'll take it off check it and replace it ,
Thanks for all your help , you guys are helping turn us Land Rover owners into part time mechanics ;)

If a V belt has worn a bit thin it will not grip very well even when at the correct tension.
As a guide when at correct tension you should be able to twist the belt with your fingers a quarter of a turn at mid point between pulley's
