Hi Guys, Im making a return to landrovers after a long break. I was nearly born in one, my dad had them all through out my childhood (and his childhood!) and i learnt to drive in a S3 LWB!! Now, im back after driving lesser cars and im wanting to buy a landie. Ive looked and looked and seen a few.. ive just been out to see one: Lovely 2a with a great body:p and ok paintwork. BUT... under the bonnet lurks a 3 litre Perkins deisel. Ive googled and Wiki'd and discovered its from a Massey Fergus tractor. Is this a good or bad thing?! Thought n feelings on this would be great as it will sell quick i think...!!!

Welcome. As an engine for MF 35's and 135's they are solid reliable thee cylinder diesel engines. Not sure how they perform in a landy with low torque tuning and the emissions levels. For an S2a the important thing is the chassis, body and trim etc. I'd buy it and look to swap it out for a 2.25 LR petrol. The Perkins has value in the classic tractor market.

If it's four cylinders it isn't the tractor engine, used in commercial vehicles so it will most likely be fine. What colour is it? Is it local in Edinburgh or Lothian somewhere?

Welcome Peter
I'm in Edinburgh as well. Would be happy to meet up for a coffee sometime if you like. I can't profess to knowing much about series Landys. There's a couple round where I live, not sure if it's one of them.
In terms of your question, I would always go for original but that's my personal preference. Once you make your purchase, and you will give me a shout if you're looking for someone to go off road.

perkins 4203?

I had one in a s3 88 , slow chugger of a thing but would pull a house down with the low end torque, dont expect much more than 50mph out of it though wthout an overdrive.

parts are cheap enough and its a good solid engine, bit noisy and dont rev high but with the torque you dont need to. mine was from a jcb or something i believe .

Welcome to the Forum:)

Perkins made lots of engines - still do - it would be good to know which one you are contemplating buying

off the top of my head it could be:-

common three cyl perkins:-
A3-148
A3-152

Four cyl variants:-

A4-203
A4-212
A4-236
A4-248

I know you say its a four, but there is local nutcase ( in the nicest possible way ) with an A6-354 in a 110 !!
