Good enough?

Okay, this could be a dopey question.. not sure. I've got my replacement Crossmember to weld on and was wondering about its finish. What I mean is, is the black painted finish it came with good enough to go over with the Smoothrite or is it just a quick paint job to prevent it getting rusty in storage?
Is it best to strip it back and do your own thing or is up to scratch?

BILL strip it ,weld it ,paint it, the coatin thats on it is just for storage n its crap....gerrit of and do the hammerite thing ,waxoyl the inside bobs yer relative n that ,that brown paint flakes off dead easy and takes anything you over coat with it ....hope this helps dave

Cheers Dave, I kinda thought that might be the case. Was hoping someone would post and tell me it's the dogs just to save a bit of work. No easy ways with a restoration !

no sweat mate bin caught like that afore P,I,T,A ,that brown stuff a pig tp gerrof on a wing say cos u dont wanna scratch it but crossmember, wire brush on the grinder sorted see you later mate im off to kip.........dave
