I've just turned 18 and I'm insured with aviva for £1600. For a defender 90 1990 2.5td. When you put your reg in it will probably come up with it being a car. Say it's not correct and change it to a van then put down how you will use the vehicle like social domestic and pleasure. Drops the price ridiculously from £9000 when it's a car to £1600

I am on pretty much the same deal, but I'm 17, first car, no NCB. I had a quote back in may with Aviva van insurance for £900 but the Landy wasn't ready a month later it went up to £1500 because I and to put my dad on it and he got hit up the ass in his Audi.

Just a thought:

My policy only cost £500 with a classic car policy when I was 18 but I didn't get any no claims bonus. I had this policy for a few years (and it got cheaper every year), and when i changed to normal insurance it was a little bit more expensive but i saved an awful lot over the 3 years by having classic car insurance.

My point is, even if you don't get any NCB it could be cheaper going with a classic car insurer.

And it was good insurance! Free breakdown cover etc. I can't remember if my windscreen was covered but it was a series screen which costs £30 to buy a whole new one!

I'm 17 and it cost me 1k to put me on my fender, just ring up its so much easier and it comes tumbling down, i'm with admiral.

2.5 ton vehicle?! Get outta here, a 90 doesn't even come close to 2.5 tons! Look mate, the thing to do is ring them. I did comparison websites and took those prices to Adrian Flux and told them how I thought those prices were ridiculous. If you talk through each point you'll find you'll get quotes as low as 1500, maybe even lower. Oh they'll tell you they can't do better but if you pester them like I did they'll break. Halved my initial quotes to £1000 and I've got a modified Disco with a whopping 3.9 V8 in it!

People are right though, it's mainly about your driving experience. My premium was lowered a bit as I'm a farm worker and have experience driving 4X4s and of course very large tractor and trailer combinations. Good luck and hope you sort it! Wish my father had been more supportive of my Green Oval ambitions!

Whatever you do don't get a station wagon as your first defender, get a panel van. I am started driving mine (a station wagon) as soon as I passed my test at 17 and it really cost me. I could have gotten it insured with Aviva for £700 as a van, but instead it costs me thousands. I did a LOT of research.

is this legit? because it seems like an excellent idea! i mean if it just so happens i have a "bump" they will not void my insurance because i classed my landy as a van?

Well mines a pick up with 2 seats so I can get away with it, but as long as you put it down as what your using it for, like social, domestic and commuting there shouldn't be a problem

No they go by vin numbers which tells what it was when manufactured. If you change it to a van with panels no glass like a csw you have to get inspections and change all your legal paper work. Just like the London emission zone, people thought I will but glass in the side panels and call it a csw, Doesn't work like that. Be careful if you do it Ill legal you could be in a world of ****.
