Hi. Before i stripped my series 2 down i had pig tail type glow plug fitted but would only last a few days before they would burn out they looked like they'd been hit with a hammer ?.So when i put it back on road i fitted the uprated type (bullet type). They lasted a week and now don't get hot ?. They do look very black with what looks like coal dust over them. I've check them with AMP meter and there getting power but not hot?. Any ideas PLEASE.:confused::confused::confused::confused:

It sounds as though they are permanently on!

Are they wired in series or parallel?

Check that your heater relay is shutting off after your engine has started.

Hope this helps.

I have a switch that i flick on for ten seconds then off from that the wire goes to a solenoid and off that to the second glow plug two wires off that one to first plug and the other one to the third then fourth. I've checked when switch is off and no power going to them?

I read some where on here that you can get a bad earth through the block and you need a second earth so i reconnected the one at the fourth plug.WOW smoke filled cab and a few wires burnt out ?.

The route is usually switch-relay-4-3-2-1-earth, as the power starts going into the plugs at no.4 cylinder, so the last plug in line should normally be no. 1.

It sounds as though they should be coupled in series if you have 2 wires coming off! If so, the lower wire goes to the upper connection on the next plug and so on..

Hope you haven't done too much damage!

you have fitted the later parallel plugs, these need 12v and each is earthed to the block

in reconnecting the earth wire near no1 to the parallel plug you have shorted them out

test them all out of engine with a bulb in series

there should be a good earth lead between engine and chassis
