Glow plugs ? How easy to fit .......

Hi all , My 2.5 dse has been a bitch to start the last couple of mornings ,it sputters into life after about 30-50 seconds sometimes more and there is always black smoke ,but when it starts its fine there after .
Reading thru some post I think it points towards glow plugs would you agree?? If it is glow plugs how easy are they to fit as I have never done them before ,I assume they under the long black plastic cover on top of the engine .
any help/advise would be great .

i had the same problem sluggish cold starting i bit the bullet and set out changing the glow-plugs not great with engines better on electrical side.
But it went fine you have to remove that plastic cover and also the air intake manifold, replacing the glow-plugs is straight forward. however i had to replace the gaskets in the manifold as they fell apart think they were blue in colour if i remember correctly.

and another bit of advise i think i bought inferior plugs as they are on the way out agian after about 1 year so i reccomend getting from dealer just got mine at £12.00 ea plus vat, hope this helps
 
I would suggest you check the condition of the leak off pipes ( thin pipes which link each injector to each other ) if they are hard or cracked- good chance they are leaking or letting air into the system. I had similar problems starting, changed all the pipes and plugs now starts instantly!
 
Thanks for the replies guys ,most helpful,cos the engine is a BMW lump has anybody compared prices for glow plugs between bmw main dealer ,land rover main dealer or Euro car parts as the later does do geniune bmw parts sometimes ,just a thought.
 
Two pointers here .... and if you follow tham BOTH your problems are gone!

FIRST, change all the leak-off pipes. You can buy the proper pipe by the yard in good motor-factors. When these little pipes crack near the ends the effect is to let air IN to the fuel system because the air going IN allows fuel in the pipes to syphon back to the tank. The effect is as your symptoms.

So, as this will cost you a fiver and half an hour ......

If that doesn't do the job, you know the pipes won't fail any time soon, and you change the glow plugs. Use copper grease on them so in a couple of seasons you can do it again.

Are these LEAK OFF PIPES easy to see ,I have never done this before ,are they under the long black plastic cover on the top of the engine ? anyone got any pictures.

Just like to thank everyone for there input to my question me and a mate replaced all 6 glow plugs on saturday afternoon ,3 hours from start to finish ,straight foward really ,some of them looked like they had been in for a long time anyway she is bang on now thanks again .

£100 saved ........love it !!
 
hi folks,
read this post with interest as i have new NGK glow plugs to fit. can someone tell me if i need any specailist tools to do this job? i've got all the usual sockets etc. but the book says i need a landrover tool (LRT-12-117) to remove the high pressure hoses

a couple of wobbley extension bits and you should be able to get them out with a 11mm ( i think) deep socket. number 2 is the hardest one i think, number 4 has a wire be careful taking this one out- fecking expensive to replace this injector.

I didn't need any special tools... I didn't remove the pipework either- this is what you may need it for, but I am sure I have read other have done the replacement the same way.
 
Hi Rodent, The only tool I had to buy was a long reach 12mm socket to remove the glow plugs , you just have to be careful when undoing the 12 nuts on the inlet manifold not to drop any ,also 6 new inlet manifold gaskets is well worth getting hold of and replacing while it is all apart .
It was my first go at this job ,all I would say is take your time and you should be fine ,it was about 3 hours including tea breaks!!.
 
cheers darklordvader, i will have a go tomorrow if the weathers ok. in response to Canyon's post, if there's a fecking expensive part that can be broken in the process, then i'm just the man to break it! i guess we learn from our mistakes though
