Getting more bottom end torque

What can be done to get more torque at lower revs.

Friend of mine I RTV trial with has a 200tdi that just seams to have bags of grunt at no revs.

Want to try and get more torque at lower revs from my 300tdi, what can I do?

Read all you like but none of the numerous tips for pump tweaking, boost pins etc will make any difference to torque at low revs because it's all related to fueling under boost from the turbo.

Torque at tick over speaks more of general engine condition. A full service of fluids, filters, tappets etc is a good place to start.

Correct. I have already explained how to get a little more grunt at low RPMs from the mechanical pump.

I don't think that's quite true. The 'smoke screw', aka low manifold pressure fuel delivery can be tweaked, which will increase performance off boost or under low boost conditions. It'll make it smoke more under low at low rpm use. But it will make a difference.

I agree general condition and maintenance is important too, correct tappet adjustment , etc.

I agree smoke screw adjustment can make some difference though small and it's not really the place to start looking

I do wonder at what point an engine refresh would be a good idea.

She still seams to run reasonably but watching this 200tdi just pull with no revs is depressing

I've had both, and I think the 200 does tend to have more low speed pull than a 300, not withstanding what the published figures say. By the time they got to developing the 300 Land Rover had seen that the Discovery was popular with "ordinary" motorists, rather than "county people" and made the 300 to be more like the sort of engine they were used to, as well as, of course, the main reason for the redesign which was to reduce the cost of manufacture.
