Getting Hot 2.5 Diesel 1995

Just been to the lakes about 100 miles going via various routes with no issues, came home via the Kirkstone pass its very long and steep, temp gauge went in to the hot and warning light lit, pulled over left it running whilst it cooled down took less than 5 minutes, managed to get to the top and the 80 miles home just sat at normal?
No coolant loss, all looks and sounds ok in the engine bay
So could I have done any damage?
What should I check, why and how?

Viscous fan not working properly is the most likely culprit. Engine up to temperature and idling, shove a tightly rolled newspaper into the fan, minding your fingers of course, and see if you can stop it. If it stops it's faulty.
I can give you a mod to use the aircon fans for cooling if your car has aircon.

Thanks it has zircon but its not working as it has had a leak in the past i think.

I have a '95 Dt. It generally runs with the temp gauge near to the blue/cold section. put ur foot down on a hill the gauge rises to the middle but stays there as the fan kicks in and soon returns to the colder section once the load is lowered.
Sounds like either your fan didn't kick in or possibly thermostat is sticky since it did cool to point where the fan should kick in.

Newspaper test +1 ;)

Sounds like the thermostat is either missing or faulty on your car, needle should stay just to the left of centre in all conditions once warmed up. Running cold uses more fuel and doesn't do the engine a lot of good.

Sounds like you don't have a thermostat at all.

Ordered new stat and ancillary belt, not sure why as I went to get stat and sensor? I blame my LR syndrome
Pick them up in morning

@ winchman- check engine oil cap for milkyness and no air bubbling in coolant system. If the heat damaged something it would be the head that suffers ;)

Did 80odd miles home, no issues, checked no milky ness or discoloured coolant, slight weep on one hose coolant dropped about 3mm, nipped up and monitoring, going to do the cooling fan mod.
Did about 40 miles yesterday with no issues

You would have to be unlucky for the head to go with one overheat. My daily driver overheated when the crap plastic BMW water pump let go, the other one overheated when the RAD split, neither have shown any consequential problems.

My plastic pump went before Xmas and sent the viscous through my rad. Gauge went right up but no light came up on dash. New rad,fan and metal pump. head rattles bit but no issues gonna flush oil with white diesel next change.
The only bit I didn't venture was the plastic elbow entering the head, I presume that's is where my thermostat is/missing from, and the seal end faces toward engine?

That is indeed where the thermostat is, make sure you get a good one and make sure you fit it with the bleed hole upright.

Thankyou Wammers, you are as always a true gentleman.

It's not a Br**part but it's not an expensive one. 'First line' it is. Never heard of them but it seems decent enough atleast for now and access should be easy. Few burrs on it I'm gonna clean off first. Coolant I got was red stuff?

Put a wire on it and dip it in a pan of hot water make sure it opens before fitting. Whilst i would not pay Land rovers stupid prices i would need original equipment manufacturer for stats.
£9.84 OEM, £62.42 Land rover you choose. :D:D
