Hi guys

Do genuine MAF sensors for the td5 sometimes have no markings? I assumed genuine items would say Siemens VDO or something to correspond to that brand. Its not purchased from the main dealer so I'm wondering if its not genuine. Although box looks very legit. Heres a pic of the only writing on it....

Where did you buy it from & was it cheap?
Pics of the box?

I bought it from a company called "autosessive" on Bay price as above £125.00.
Do not have box, it had Bosch all over it and yellow.....checked out with Bosch and they are agents for them....been in 4 months now and very good.

In answer to your question yes if it’s genuine it will have the makers name printed on its cover,
Bosch/ continental/ Siemens and so forth, definitely worth paying extra for the genuine article,

What did Bosch say about the lack of markings on the unit?

I bought a MAF the other day from LR Direct who allow you to choose different brands so you can keep away from Britpart. I selected 'VDO Siemens' and it duly turned up in the VDO box, decorated with little shiny labels, QR codes and the like to show how genuine it was. But the unit itself had various numbers on it but nothing to say VDO Siemens. I hope it's a real one because it cost a lot more than the Britpart version!

The problem is that there will not be many production lines. the quality ones - VDO/Bosch etc could all be made on the same line and so get labelled later and likewise the factory making the cheap ones will also be labelled for several brands. Its not impossible that some of the cheap ones are also made on the same production line, but come out of the "rejects" box via the back door. I think a mistake we all make (I certainly have) is to think that the cheap version of something is just a bit lower quality but will work OK even if it doesn't last so well. That's mistake, some of the poor quality parts from China are fakes, just blatant fraud. Some of the stuff is so dangerous I'm beginning to think its some kind of war on the West to try to kill us. Here's a horrifying example:

Lovely Scottish accent narrating it too. I've watched a few of this guy's videos and found them interesting, even when it's stuff I already know about. There's also a very moving one where he talks about looking after his mother with Alzheimer's disease too.

Long ago I developed the theory that China was trying to undermine the capitalist economies of the West by flooding us with substandard merchandise. Those of us old enough to have been using tools in the early 1980s might remember the 'Flying Fish' brand hacksaw blade. These were really cheap but unfortunately had a tendency to shatter on contact with metal, so you lunged forward and skinned your knuckles. I even made up a song about it. 'On the road to Mandalay, Where the Flying Fishes play, You can hear the hacksaws breaking out of China 'cross the bay'. Then after a while they were replaced with 'Airplane' brand ones which were just as brittle, but unfortunately didn't fit into the rhyme so well and the allusion to Kipling's original was lost.

Maybe the explanation is more mundane. Here was a country trying to industrialise rapidly, but with very little expertise and largely isolated from other nations, with a workforce with very little technical experience but desperate to meet targets. So stuff would go wrong, sometimes in quite large batches. Rather than throw it away, they tried to flog it on the international market to generate a bit of foreign exchange.

But now, in 2021? There's no excuse for things like a fake circuit breaker. After Hong Kong last week I won't cut them any slack. They have a space program so they know what they are doing.

For a country that can put up entire fake Apple Stores https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-fake-chinese-apple-store-shenzen-kunming-2015-9?r=US&IR=T the odd fake circuit breaker is small beer indeed. I think in the last 30 or 40 years, following experience with landmark products like the Flying Fish hacksaw blade they've realised you can sell any old crap to the west and no one can do anything about it. The bunch of kids on £20k a year in the average local authority trading standards office in the UK can't tackle a whole country. So they focus on the serious business of tackling market traders who insist on using pounds and ounces and leave China alone.

Who steals the goose from off the common,
But lets the greater felon loose,
Who steals the common from the goose.

On my first post I said the unit is marked with Bosch and the correct part number for a Disco

Thanks for clearing it up. The way I read your post was that the box was yellow & had Bosch printed all over it but nothing about it being on the unit itself.
