Hi,

Please excuse my ignorance.

I have an automatic Discovery 2 and would like some information on the following:

1) High/Low Gears:
a) How do the High/Low gears work?
b) When should the respective gears be used?
c) Are there any conditions/limitations that should be followed when using them?

2) Can I shift the gear stick between D, 1, 2, and 3 WITHOUT stopping the vehicle?

Cheers.

The High/Low ratios are for normal on-road and slow Off-Road work respectively.

Get yourself a copy of the user handbook for your vehicle to see the full scope.

You can shift up and down through the auto box selector while on the move, but the on-board controller/ECU will not let the box shift down if the road speed is too high for that gear.

You can manually change down to take advantage of engine braking which you wouldn't normally get while in D.

Hi,

I have an automatic Discovery 2. What gears would you recommend that I should use in snow / icy weather?

Cheers.

You have ABS and traction control. If you don't know the finer points of driving just let them do the work. Just drive normally and remember that it will take a VERY long time to stop, whatever gear you're in.

Driving down steep hills in snow / ice I use engine braking only, no foot brake. Low box and 2nd gear, or 1st if it's real steep and slippy. Going up hill is fine in High box and D.

Get out there in the white stuff and have a go!!!
