I have a freelander mk1.. during the summer the gears started slipping.. I had the oil changed.. I find its prone to doing this when the car warms up..can anyone tell me if there's anything I can try before getting a new gearbox

What year is vehicle? TD4 or V6.

Which gears slip? All or just a specific gear or 2?
What mileage has box done?
Any recent maintenance done?
Was problem there before fluid change?

I had a slipping gear 4 on a 2001 model year and found a manufacturing problem. Not too hard to solve but it depends what yours is doing.

It's a 2004 td4.. 2 litre BMW engine
I25 000 miles
All gears are slipping after a driving a short while. Its had a oil change,which helped for a short time.. we have been told maybe a mega flush will solve it but because of the age of the landy they can't say

It's unlikely that a mega flush will work, those are just snake oil.

If all gears are slipping, it's possibly a pump issue, where the pump isn't generating enough pressure to hold the clutch pack locked.
It needs to go to an auto transmission specialist to have the fluid pressure checked when cold and hot.
Also a read of the gearbox TCM for codes and live data could be helpful.
 
Thank you.. we have contacted a gearbox specialist... the last one we went to just told us we needed a new gearbox without testing it.. we want to see if its something else before the worse scenario
 
Agree, all gears slipping is probably a common cause like the pump. That's why I asked for more info. Problem is, the more you use it and the more it slips, the more the clutches wear out !! At 125k miles it may be worth a recon box, but try to get the fault identified first. Pressure readings can be done on diagnostics I think.
 
Might be worth getting the fluid level checked, a low fluid level could lead to cavitation/foaming in the torque converter meaning the pump is getting starved of fluid, and or is pumping air-laden fluid, acting like brakes needing blead.
 
Might be worth making sure who ever does the fluid level change sees this video on how to check the level...

...reason I dug this out is there's a bolt at the back that often gets mistaken for a filler plug, that when undone to fill it with fluid, causes the reverse clutch band to drop out permanently crippling that gear, or until the box is rebuilt.
 
Surely worth checking that the fluid level is correct before changing the box?

I have a spare 80 k miles autobox but you are a bit far away !!

I'm back home this evening.. I'll check out all that I've been advised first but it seems like it going to be a tough job getting an auto gearbox ... could it be the torque converter?

I haven't noticed. All I've observed is the gears are fine while cold and when it heats up the problem starts.. also one time it lost acceleration and wouldn't pick up even with My foot completely down

So was the "gearbox" slipping and revs red lining, or were there no revs?

During these instances of slipping, do the revs rise, or is the engine not reving?
