The bell housing is a dry area so you shouldn't find oil unless there is a failed seal. When you say the engine won't turn, what symptoms are you getting? Does the relay click and nothing or does it try to turn and you can hear it struggling?

The starter whirrs but thats all. Starter is tight against engine. Should I take it off?
Would starter cause the sudden loss in power?
Just had gearbox sump off and changed filter. All looked ok, no broken bits fell out.

It would if it had fired into ring gear whilst engine was running and engine was driving it. Jammed then the one way clutch had failed. Take it off and have a look.

Starter motor off and looks ok, no twisted shaft or broken teeth etc. Flywheel ring gear looks ok the wee bit i can see.
Connected battery across motor and whirrs away quite happily.

How did you connect it up? Motor should not run unless solenoid is thrown.

Pair of jump leads, positive to the nut that held the big cables from car and to one of the wee lucar terminals, negative to casing.

OK that is correct.. Now try and turn the engine by hand clockwise. See if it moves. If it does look at one way clutch on starter. If it has failed starter will run but not turn engine.
