Hi,

I will soon be requiring a new gearbox for my 1989 landrover 110 V8 CSW.
I was just wondering if i should buy a secondhand one or is it more beneficial to buy a new one?

Cheers.

Obviously, the main difference here is cost! Personally I would go for a recon box.

least you have a comeback, a warranty and of course safe in the knowledge that what you have bought is in good order.

prolly a recond box will make more sense. You should have a LT77 box on your 110. maybe try getting a R380 box as shifting is slightly easier on this one. but do check if they mate the X-fer box properly, which i think they do.

Try Ashcrofts, who probably have the best reputation and overall knowledge, should find everything you need to know here:- http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/ and no need to leave home, they will send a courier for your old unit and deliver the new, if you're into DIY, or fit it for you.

Look around, i just had to get a new transfer box and gearbox for my 200tdi. looked at second hand but mostly looked like i would be in for problems again pretty soon. SO i opted for recon (actually ended up with a brandnew transfer box from landrover for recon prices thanks to some help from a friendly dealer!) The gearbox is recon and i am happy that i have a years warrenty to play with.

Earlier post mentioned Ashcroft. They are highly recommended (by me at least).

You also really need to think about changing the txfer case input gear for a cross drilled one while it's all apart - maybe an extra £75 I think. There's a well known problem with pre x-drilled transfer case gear that causes the splines on the gearbox output shaft to get seriously worn where they mate to the txfer box - due to lack of oil.

Leaving the txfer box input gear will likely result in your new gbox output shaft rapidly end up looking like the old one...

The symptom of worn gbox o/p shaft & txfer i/p gear is a clunk when taking up drive and being a bit rough with your clutch. The extreme end result is that the gbox splines strip and you stop!

hope that lot makes sense and is proves useful to someone...
