This seems like a silly question to ask, but is my series 3 swb supposed to have 2 gearbox x-members? About a foot in front of the gearbox cross member on my landy is another x-member that looks slightly different. I damaged this off-roading and have bought a newgearbox cross member and have recieved one which looks like the one further back. I am now under the impression that the forward x-member is an added extra by a previous owner. Is this the case? Thanks (i hope that all makes sense)
 
hello mate , i think you will find that the forward member is standard on the chassis , it should sit at the bell housing of the gearbox and the flywheel housing of the engine joint, i would also recomend that you replace the the next member back for a military spec one it will need the anchor points welding on but it unbolts so you can drop the gearbox out underneath as opposed to taking the seatbox out its far less hassle hope this helps
 
The X-members are vulnerable on Series Land-Rovers. I've managed to bend the bellhousing and gerbox X-members on my otherwise mint replacement chassis:mad2: The solution is not to drive over tree stumps or make a skid plate I think.
 
I think i'll just weld in the gearbox x-member in its place considering it costs less than a third of the price and im probably gonna smash it again sometime.

Not a good idea - the gearbox bellhousing X-member is deeper than than the gearbox one so it would not fit properly. It would also foul the downpipe on a 2 1/4 petrol landy. The belhousing X-member is much more substantial than the gearbox X-member in order to stop the main chassis rails twisting due to the forces exerted by the bulkhead onto the bulkhead chassis outriggers.
 
in that case i think i will repair the one i have got and weld the gearbox cross member just behind it for extra strength. I'll have a look tomorrow and if it doesnt look feasable I will just have to bite the bullet and fork out the cash.

:rolleyes: tis bit expensive !

i just cut the busted section out of mine and welded in box to replace it, of the same section and cuts. easy really , save yer cash. ;)
