gearbox trouble

my 200tdi manual gearbox has difficulty in selecting a gear when engine is on,engine off the gear stick seem to be able to select easily,have i got an expensive repair looming?

Check to make sure the clutch isn`t dragging first, mate. Sounds like synchro cones / hubs /sleeves. Bits aren`t terribly expensive but DIY gearbox repair is one for a specialist, really, or confirmed meccano addicts. Recon box is the best option. DIY £500-ish, garage £700 up.

Many thanks for quick reply steve,my disco is with me in france so i am sure the parts wont be easy to find and its going to be more than what you suggest as i cant do the repairs, so i will be at the mercy of the local garage.i will keep u posted cheers.

could be a bent clutch fork, disco's are common for that

This is a classic sign of CLUTCH DRAG.

That is, the clutch is not fully disengaging.

The synchromesh resists your attempts to get into gear, and it probably crunches into reverse.

Do all the things that help the pedal to work the clutch - start with a bleed job.

absolutely spot on charles,a friend found master cylinder low in fluid ,bled it and the gear box even gets first easily best its been in the 9yrs i had the disco.Thanks to all you guys for the helpful suggestions.
