Hi, My '76 Series 3 200 tdi is stuck in 1st gear. I can't get it out of gear, what ever I try.

Any ideas?

Thank you, that's a good thought. A bit more back ground, I wanted to push the LR a couple of feet inside my workshop but found I left it in gear. I lazily reached in to pull it out of gear without putting the clutch down and that's where it all went wrong... I'll get the transmission tunnel off later.

if the selector to shaft bolt is loose the selector shaft can spin a little inn fork and prevent detent dropping into groove.

Well guys, I've just taken the nearside floor panel out, peeled up one side on the tunnel covering the selectors and could immediately see the middle selector shaft was forward of neutral and the end of the gear stick was in the right hand selector shaft, first gear. I reached in, pushed the selector back, all sorted! I had visions of dropping the gearbox, this is a positive end to the day. As I said, this was caused by trying to pull it into neutral by leaning in, without the clutch. I won't do that again!
Right, floor back down... Cheers for the advice.
