Gearbox question

Hey everyone,

Hope you're all very well. Im currently stripping and rebuilding the original gearbox/transferbox for my series 3. It had very noisy bearings when I bought the Landy and I scored a VERY cheap used one off eBay so I fitted that while I play with the original one over winter.

All is going well with the strip down and Ive found that both the main shaft bearings were not very well. Im planning on rebuilding it with one of the kits from syncro gearboxes (Land Rover fans ask Santa for the coolest presents) But Im also intending on replacing any of the other dodgy bits while Im in there.

There seems to be a lot of play in the 4wd dog on the output shaft from the transfer box. There is about 1/8 a turn on the output shaft inside the dog

Just wondered if any of the great minds on here had ever had an in-depth play with their LT76 and could offer any insight as to whether this is normal?

Perfect, Thanks fella. figured I might as well do anything else in there I found while Im at it.

What are your synchro hubs like ? 1st&2nd synchro are almost a service item in a box that has done any work ( or been on a farm ! ( ask me how I know )

When I took mine apart I had a very close look for wear on teeth and such things as the synchro hubs and compared with pics online of new ones , I would get good quality brand name replacement bearings they will last longer

+1 - Timken, NTN, etc... and make sure the tolerance is right - no C3 "wobblers" where you need a C1
