Gearbox problem???

whilst driving in 3rd and 4th gear under load the whole car is shaking alot or vibrating whichever but its very noticable i have a feeling it mayy be a problem with the gear box or maybe a propshaft can someone please point me in the right direction?

maybe your overgearing it causeing more strain on the drive train? or maybe its with the increase in speed using the higher gears? i'd just start with uj's and work your way in. mine used to do it and i found it was a uj, same just happend on a mates RR classic and it turn out to be the same. chock the car leave it in neutral and give the props a good shake up and down and side to side as opposed to trying to turn it as all you will discover is slack in the diffs and not the uj's.

So if you get it happening in say 3rd at 40 mph, and still at 40 mph change to 4th and drive on holding 40, does the noise/vibes stop or keep on?

You see where we're heading here?

Like .... inside the gearbox ....

But check those UJs FIRST no matter what.

it keeps on going any speed and i am pretty confident its gearbox but am living in hope its something else lol

AHA!

10 to 1 you say sorry to Mr Slob for disbelieving him!

The noise is probably being CREATED in the prop shaft(s) UJs, but being transmitted through the transmission which is where you hear it from. Your ears deceive you!

Park car on the level.
Put a brick at each wheel (behind the rears, ahead of the fronts) so the car can't roll over you.
Put a big carpet under the car and side under with a torch. Safety specs stop the crap from dropping in your eyes. There are FOUR UJs, and check them all.
Working close to the UJs, push and pull the shaft UP AND DOWN and then SIDEWAYS.
There should be NO perceptible movement between the two Yokes. If you try to tun one half the otyher MUST move without ANY free paly. If there is any movement, the UJ is knakkkkkered. No fix is possible - too late for grease - fit a new UJ kit. Haddocks job.

And check all four of them.
I bet you find one of them is moving HEAPS.

Greasing once in a while makes them last almost for ever.

ok ill give that a go right now ill let ya know the outcome
 
been out and had a look and my uj bearing is all over the shop its shocking so tmrw im going down to get a uj bearing set tmrw any idea of cost gonna fit it too:)
 
The UJ kits cost a fiver each if you know where to get them, and might take a couple of hours to fit one.

If you intend to do it yourself, my STRONGEST POSSIBLE ADVICE is to find someone who has already done a few, and watch him do it.

Have you told Slob "Sorry" yet ! ?

He was right all along.

But you did good to find it quickly.

im going down the father in laws hes fitted hundreds on trucks he said mine will be a doddle compared to lorry so fingers crossed will take pics and let ya know the outcome thankyou for everyones help including slob
 
i now have the parts and all new bolts gonna fit it in an hour or so i will take some pics of how i get on

Interesting one that. My 110 has had a similar problem.

When turning right if I'm in too high a gear and apply a touch too much throttle I get a vibrating sound, I immediately drop the throttle and/or drop a gear. Vibration stops.

Gonna check my uj's.
 
james its far easier to take the prop fully off to do it so why not buy 2 and do both uj's on the prop????????????
if he claims its a doddle then get 4 and he will have them done in no time and you wont have to worry for a while, just a grease up now and again. if one breaks youll know about it :eek:
 
fixed it did one and was quite hard enough only did one side popped the prop end out came out fine the old one was royally fubard u can see in the pictures now it has never been so smooth its wonderful
