Hi all,

Apologies in advance, I am not very mechanical.

I've got a '95 300tdi and have a slight problem with my gearbox. It is all as sweet as a nut apart from second gear. 90% of the time it gives a crunch when moving up or down into 2nd. It always goes in and occassionally it does so without making much noise if you let the revs drop completely and coax her in.

It's not stopping me use the landy at all but it is just one of those annoying things and I am sure it will only get worse. The rest of the gears engage fine.

Does anyone know:
a) what the problem is?
b) can this be repaired or is it a new gearbox job?
c) any idea of cost of answer b?
d) anywhere in the coutries close to Surrey that could do the job?

Thanks very much to all in advance.

Nathan

If the oil level in the gearbox is correct and the oil is the correct type (check both these first!) then tt'll be the synchro on 2nd worn out.

In which case you've got four options:

1.) Learn to change into 2nd slowly so to avoid the graunch.
2.) Buy a 2nd hand gearbox from a scrappy or e-bay, fit it yourself and hope it's better than your existing one
3.) Buy a recon box from somewhere like Ashcroft (Ashcroft is pretty much the benchmark by which all other reconners are measured) and fit it yourself
4.) Use Ashcrofts fitting service

1 is the cheapest at £0... 4 is the most expensive at... well... see for yourself ;)

Cheers,

I had a very similar problem with changing down into third with my LT77 not long ago and I was very close to taking it into my local specialist for some work doing. Funnily enough, a quick sprint down the motor-way (I had a genuine reason) at 70MPH for just over an hour seems to have fixed it. I can only assume something that was stuck has worked its self loose or some oil has been thrown onto something which hasn't been lubricated in a long while. Give it a go! If my 2.5 N/A can achieve 70, then anything else can (just as long as its not a 2.25 N/A)
