Gearbox problem possibly........

Hi, On the level it does. Not tried that tbh on an incline so will do. Plenty of inclines on Biddulph Moor where I live LOL.

Regards.
I have 2 P38's neither will hold on much of a hill at idle, so easy to mislead yourself with a hill test.
If it's revving high between shifts, it may just be a sticky valve block from standing unused. Lucas may fix it.
They all slow down on inclines, 136bhp and 2.25 tonnes guarantees that.

Try this also.
Not an official test and not for very long either!!
In drive and running.
Handbrake on.
Foot on brake as well.
Try very briefly to rev the engine while in gear past 2000rpm. It should resist like hell.
If it surpasses 2000rpm with ease then you may well have issues in the box.
Please do not repeat this test needlessly, it may well lead to damage as the box is pressurised ready to move the bus!!!

Well I put the bus in drive......on the level.......it drove forward without the hand brake on and foot off the brake.

Also put it on an incline.....maybe of only 8-10 degrees. It held in both forward and reverse.

On the level I put it in Drive. Handbrake on and footbrake on........applied the accelerator and whilst there was resistance it got to over 2000 revs and was not stalling the engine.

So unless another gear oil change and the lucas transmission fix works I think it's probably goosed.

Got someone coming on Monday to read codes just to ensure it's clear of those.

I'll probably get another box, exchange it leaving the original TC on and strip rebuild/recon the box that's in it now. That way if it happens to be the TC playing up that confirms that I suppose.

I cannot see it wearing out standing so it must have been heading out prior to me getting ownership of it.

Shame....but part of the gig I suppose.

Thanks everyone. Will let you know if another change and the lucas fix helps but there is sure a weakness somewhere in the drive train not to stall the engine.

Best Wishes.

Everyone.

Here's hoping that the lucas fixes it then. (Plus more oil changes as advised).

Would be great to be able to switch from our l322 and use the P38 if I don't have to rip the box out. I personally like the sitting and feel of the p38.

Yes I understand the slowing down on inclines it's just the revving and struggle that appears to take place.

Is it possible to manually trigger the gearbox solenoids via a code reader scanner ? (I believe the nanocom was advised). I would suppose (maybe incorrectly) that blipping them back and forth via an ECU manually in stationary mode would help to unstick them and work them loose.

Regards.

As far as I'm aware, no diagnostics will allow operation of the solenoids, you can however get a replacement ECU for mega bucks that allows reprogramming of shift patterns. Get it wrong and it can be very destructive.
Don't expect Lucas to provide an immediate fix, it took a couple of long hard runs on the motorway before it fixed mine.

Thé Lucas fix is like red grease?? It's made my gearbox feel like it's full of cushions!! The behaviour is the same but really less noticeable. It does still knock a touch from 1-2.. not all the time. Time will tell. :D

It took some hard driving before Lucas fixed mine. Don't know about red grease. I will need to treat it again soon as the shift up from 2 to 3 is allowing an over rev either that or get the HP 24 box fitted.

The Lucas fix I put into mine was as thick as grease almost?? Still waiting for the
1-2 gear shunt to stop. More miles maybe...

My P38 holds position or creeps forwards on a gentle hill in "D" at idle. So did my last one.
I have probably been lucky with them both.
This one has issues with XYZ switch adjustment. I ought to get it sorted.

I don't know what you have purchased, Lucas Transmission Fix is a liquid about the consistency of EP90.
Yes gloopy as hell.. I did hear it in some hot water and mix it with a small amount of sexton as well. Slowly but surely it's making differences. My better half a Citroen Xsara auto has a real difference to it.
