hi all changed the rear airbags and inlet manifold gasket today and have a few probs ever since ive owned the car its had a gearbox fault msg but seems to have driven fine and now it seems as if its pulling of in 2-3 gear (really slow and no kickdown) also there is no sport/manual mode or gear indicator on the dash. not sure if realated to anything ive done but just seem weird any ideas would much appriciated also my final problem is the car is running really bad and using loads of fuel and i mean loads 5mpg if lucky this was like this befor today so not related but still need to sort it or should i just wait to get it plugged in any ideas help would be great thanks sorry for the long list

Sounds like your gearbox has gone into limp mode.

If you're sure your battery voltage is ok and all the earths are intact to the gearbox, then you probably need to get the codes read.

when you say voltage is ok do you mean charging when running? and also what should it be on a range 14v ish or different

Yes, but it also needs to be good to begin with. I assume it probably is though or it would be very hard to start.

The gearbox will report gearbox fault if it's not receiving enough voltage, which is the most common scenario. You could try checking all the electrical connections to it (including those to the gearbox ECU under the passenger seat). The fault message should clear and restore full operation of the gearbox if it is a bad connection and you fix it.

Unfortunately other faults can also bring up this message so I think you're going to have to get the faults read if you can't find a bad connection anywhere. I've just had to do this with mine but at least the fault codes appeared to back up my theory about what is wrong with it.

Limp mode will also disable kickdown and all the gear indicator illumination.

rite the car would not start today so sounds like this is the case so my first question is could i have wired the alternator up wrong when i refitted it as was fine yesterday when drove it to the garage all be it still with the gearbox fault flashing up ive just put a mm across and ive only got 11.15v with everything disconnected and 13.94-5 v running

also are all the connection you talk of just like multy plugs etc and how many am i looking for as struggle reading wiring diagrams etc lol

I've not done an alternator on mine yet, but they're usually quite hard to wire up wrong.

Sounds like the voltage might be a little low with the engine switched off. Might be worth charging it.

I would expect the running voltage to be slightly higher than that although it's not too far off. If you get it running again, switch the headlights and heated rear screen on and then measure the voltage again. It should stay the same.

As for the connections, they seem to be all different types. You can probably leave the ones at the back as they're mostly to do with the transfer box. The ones you want can be quite hard to get to (and to get apart).

The ECU under the passenger seat (there are a few under there - I think the gearbox one is the top one) just has a big multiplug with a metal locking catch on it.

I'd charge the battery fully first and see if that makes a difference.

Either the battery is flat or it's shagged. You should see more than 12volts without the engine running and 14 to 14.4 volts with the engine running. Could be a dead cell on the battery.
