Gearbox oil

I have a disco 1 and want to do a oil change.
I have read on sites that a synthetic oil is the best way to go, what is the best recommended oil for me to use?
The Disco is a manual with 190000km on the clock.
She sometimes grates when I change from 1st to second

Believe it's MTF for the R380 (300tdi) box, and ATF for the LT77 (200tdi). My gearbox was a bit kellogs crunchy nut before I changed the oil, just put the proper stuff in and it was fine after that.
 
As above mate i've got a 300tdi and mine has been done with MTF but did'nt solve the grating between 1st and 2nd tho :confused:

I refilled my 300tdi gearbox with MTF and it all but got rid of the 2nd gear crunch. Saying that the old stuff did come out like black water, and there wasn't much in there. If your gearbox is knackered that bad then it doesn't matter what fluid you pump in it's still going to crunch. Don't listen to the adverts for fancy gear oils in the magazines, if your synchros are worn they're not going to help much!
 
My Haynes Manual says that the Manual & the Auto's should BOTH use ATF....Which is what I put in......did I do wrong?? :eek: (Disco1 '94 300tdi)

Land Rover initially recommended ATF for both but then changed their minds and altered it to MTF in the manual box. On that basis I'd say you'll probably be alright with ATF for a little while.

mine crunches 1st to 2nd too , i thought all r380s did :D
 
Please some one help clear this up. Now I have read that all Landrover's grate 1st to second. Is this true ? I also was told and read that the R380 only takes ATF ??
Now the next question is my Xfer box makes a high pitch noise when I get to 90km/h+ and silences again at 110km/h. Is this common?
I have replaced the oil in the box with thicker oil and replaced all the bearings as well as sand blasted all the gears and it still does it under load only.
