Toping a manual gearbox is easy once you undo the fill plug. Auto gearbox is another story.

Yes, but why top it up unless it's leaking. It's better to change the gearbox fluid, rather than simply topping it up. Also the fluid type and operation varies by engine and gearbox type.
It seems to hold first gear, that's why I thought it might need topping up,
