Hi guys and gals,
I have just got my second (for my sins) land rover defender 90 200tdi, and this one is starting to be come more and more of a pain. Managed to drive it home, but when driving it is making a metal on metal scraping noise. Though it stops when the clutch is depressed/neutral so I dont think it is the gearbox, and the engine idles perfectly (no noise either).

One thing that could be the cause is excess lateral movement in the front propsaft output flange on the front of the transfer box, but would this be the cause of the noise? Could it also be due to the fact that the transfer box will not change from high to low? I have't really got the knowledge to take the transfer/gearbox apart to have a deeper look. Its just that the noise stops with the clutch depressed. I dont really know where to start and the noise is VERY noticable in the front..

Any thoughts appreciated,
Cheers!

could easy be ,you could start by checking condition of oil,and dropping transfer box sump plate and checking for play in diff and other gears
