Hi,

I have a severe knocking sound from the gearbox area of my Defender 90 200tdi whenever i accelerate/decelerate and release the clutch when driving. I have read that this is probably the input gear in the transfer box that is worn. This is no problem because it has gotten to the point where i don't want to drive the truck anymore and i have a free weekend.

But what i am a little concerned about is the gearbox tail shaft that drives the transfer box input gear, if this turns out to be very worn as well does it mean that the gearbox has to be out? And is it a job that could be done without sending it to a garage?

I'm an Agricultural Engineer (in training) so i'm not afraid when it comes to hands-on work with spanners but i have only had this Defender for about 2 weeks now and with it being my first one, i'm not incredibly confident in pulling it all to bits just yet.

Thanks in advance!

Cameron

The UJ's seem fine in my opinion, i had also asked a guy from work to have a quick look underneath to make me feel certain and he thought they were ok too.

Thanks to your thread jonnyoxford it has made it fairly clear to me that the input gear is the problem. I have been reading through the guide you linked in your thread over the last couple of days and I'm under the impression that removing the gear isn't such a bad job to do ... it's just the fear of finding a worn tail shaft that concerns me :(

With a clunk so loud i can't see only the gear being worn.

my fear was the same, but for the sake of a £45 part from Ashcrofts, and a couple of hours work, I would give it a try.

Sure the shaft will have wear too, but the new gear will cut 50% of the wear out (assuming equal wear of course) and will stop it getting worse, as it will be cross drilled, which the original is probably not.

For what its worth my clunk is gone.

The shaft is getting into a different ball game, gearbox out and special LR tools required to strip and change it. If you were going to do that I would suggest changing the gearbox for a recon.

Check out ashcrofts website for further info.
