Hi, Just bought a Defender 90 2002. Bit worried as it seems to crunch a little going into second (and sometimes third). This does not happen every time but feel that unless the revs are exactly on...say 1000rpm it will grind a little (is this normal???)
Thanks for your help. Worried that this is going to cost me a new gearbox!!!

when was the oil last changed? i think its meant to be every 24,000 miles. it is on older defenders/90/110.

not sure if this aplies to newer defenders but the older ones, certainly 90/110's dont have a syncro-meshed gearbox therefore you need to match your speed/revs to have a (reletively) smooth change.

are you new to landrovers and have you owned it long? it might just be that your used to other vehicles and not used to what effectively is a still a tractor ;)

You are probably right...It may be a case that I'm just not used to it yet. The gear change in those gears is not that bad but not as smooth as the others hence my concern.
I reckon it must be me as it has been serviced pretty thoroughly by a landy main dealer. Thanks for your help!

well as long as you have a record of a recent gearbox (main and transfer) oil change, then that should be ok. if you try diff rev ranges you may find it works out better, once you get used to where to change you will soon forget about crunchy gears.

i think most boxes crunch around 2nd-3rd anyway, its what most people comment about.

dont think its anything serious, but someone else may be along shortly and throw a spanner in the works... so to speak.
